Maui - The Valley Isle
The day after Christmas, 2008 we hopped in the car and took the 3½ hour long trip on the Super Ferry over to Maui "The Valley Isle". Outside Maui, beyond the snorkler's paradise of Molokini, lays Kaho'olawe Island "The Sacred Isle", which the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor was taken over by the military, who commenced ship-to-shore training in bombardment towards the island. It was later also the testing site for the underwater high-explosive test program in 1965, and by 1967 it was the target for the surface-to-air missile training. Today the island is used by native Hawaiians for cultural and spiritual purposes and commercial uses are strictly prohibited. We also visited the site of the Iao Needle, where King Kamehameha won his battle over Maui, the last lava flow of Maui (1790), the quaint little town of Lahaina, watched the surfers battling the waves on North Shore and saw some whales far in the distance.
